Job Summary/Description:
The position requires a full knowledge of station operations and technical layout, with a strong emphasis on broadcast news. Must possess good interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written, and excellent computer skills. Comprehensive knowledge of RF signals, transmission mechanics, mechanical engineering, and studio technical equipment operation. Must possess the appropriate technical skills that enable diagnosis of equipment issues and ability to resolve problems quickly. Requires a competent knowledge of broadcast signal flow with the ability to quickly identify key points of failure and bypass faults with minimal system downtime.

Duties/Responsibilities (include but not limited to):

– Manage all engineering aspects of the technical facility including studio support, post-editing systems, field production support, and transmission of live/taped events and programs
– Have expert knowledge regarding equipment, technology, and systems and be able to step in and assist in emergencies
– Ability to perform regular maintenance tasks including repairs, equipment replacement, supplies, etc.
– Documents and executes necessary corrective actions
– Ensures all transmission equipment is operating correctly before and during live event telecasts; corrects and documents technical problems and reports them to the managers
– Ensures compliance with applicable regulations and communication with other departments by maintaining discrepancy logs and equipment incident reports and regularly audits these documents to identify areas where the performance or process needs to improve
– Assist the Chief Engineer in overseeing and implementing Engineering projects
– Schedules and Supervises Maintenance Engineering staff
– Working knowledge of the latest operating systems software, including server and desktop operating systems
– Familiarity with networking routing and IP addressing
– Manage the maintenance and repair of all company facilities associated with our station. This includes HVAC, generators, security systems, satellite dishes, electrical, hardware, etc.
– Manage the maintenance and repair of the towers, antennas, and transmission lines/connections
– Must be available to work during breaking news situations, severe weather, new system integrations and updates, and provide on-call services 24/7

Qualifications/Requirements:
– Must have at least 2 years of working experience in broadcast engineering
– Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related is preferred but is not required
– On-the-job and/or formal training in repairing Broadcast Transmitters
– Display and maintain a professional appearance, based on station standards, and a professional demeanor
– Strong leadership skills and the ability to operate and adapt in high-pressure situations
– Professional, communicative, highly self-motivated, detail-oriented
– Must have a clean driving record

The anticipated starting salary range for Rochester, NY based individuals expressing interest in this position is $50,000/yr-$60,000/yr.  Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities and location of the applicant, as well as internal and external equity.

Responsibilities

What You’ll Do:

  • Maintain integrity of all on-air and on-line products, including FM, HD and AM transmissions, digital audio & audio streaming
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair all broadcast radio station equipment, including transmitters, antennas, satellite downlinks, automation system, studio equipment, remote equipment, generators, telephone system and other related equipment
  • Install broadcast equipment at studios, transmitter sites, company vehicles, remote broadcast locations, and at two-way sites, all while keeping within good engineering practices
  • Assist in planning and development of all aspects of technical facilities including studios, transmitters, telephone systems, satellite, STL, computers and data networks
  • Create instructional materials and teach operators to use technical equipment and systems
  • Fix and/or facilitate building maintenance
  • Coordinate with third party vendors

Qualifications

Required:

  • Minimum two years of experience in broadcast facility maintenance, including hands-on support of FM radio transmitters and modern studio equipment at a radio station.
  • Basic knowledge of computers and IT systems is a must, including proficiency with Google, (GMail, Google Doc Sheets, Slides) * Experience with modern digital audio systems including Wide Orbit, Vox Pro and Livewire is highly desirable.
  • Strong proven skills including ability to multitask in a multiple-project environment.
  • Availability to work various hours / days, including some weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to provide on-call status 24/7 on a rotating basis with Chief Engineer in case of equipment failure.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills are critical,with knowledge of remote repairs on computers via Zoom or other remote software.
  • A valid driver’s license, satisfactory completion of a motor vehicle record check, and, if the position requires the use of the applicant’s own vehicle, proof of insurance is required.

Preferred:

  • Ability to do component level troubleshooting.
  • Associate’s degree in electronics preferred.
  • Familiarity with high voltage, RF exposure and safety, generators and backup power systems, satellite downlink facilities and receivers.
  • Knowledge of FCC Rules and Regulations.
  • Experience in project planning, management and execution.
  • Strong verbal, writen communication skills and excellent customer service
  • SBE Certification
